Google Ads: Financial Services Verification comes to Canada in early 2027

On October 20, 2026, Google announced that it will bring its Financial Services Verification program to Canada and the United States in early 2027. Businesses that advertise certain financial products on Google will have to show that they are authorized by a regulator or listed in a recognized registry. Google has not yet published the rules for Canada: it says it will release them before launch and notify the advertisers concerned.
What Google announced
The announcement is signed by Keerat Sharma, who leads ads privacy and safety at Google. The post appeared the same day on the Google Ads blog and on Google's Canadian blog.
Google already requires advertiser identity verification. According to its internal data (September 1, 2025 to August 31, 2026), more than 97% of the ads people see on Google in Canada and the United States come from identity-verified advertisers.
The new requirement goes further: advertisers will have to prove they are allowed to offer the financial service they advertise. Google presents it as protection against scammers who impersonate well-known brands.
The program is not new. Google has enforced it in the United Kingdom since September 6, 2021 and says it was the first major platform to require it. According to its help page, it now covers 42 countries, including France, Australia and every European Union member state.
In Canada, Google says it is working closely with the Canadian Bankers Association ahead of the rollout. In the United States, it relies on the American Bankers Association and its registry of authorized banks. Google adds that it will adapt its approach to each country, because regulations differ across borders.
Barry Schwartz, founder of Search Engine Roundtable, shared the news on X that morning.
Google Ads Financial Services Verification rolling out in the United States and Canada
The three-step timeline
- Before launch, Google will publish country-specific details: accepted registries, required credentials and onboarding instructions.
- When verification opens, Google will notify each advertiser if and when they need to complete it.
- Enforcement follows that notice. It will be phased in country by country, starting in early 2027.
Who will be affected
For Canada, Google has not yet specified the categories covered. Its post refers to "certain financial ads" and gives checking accounts and credit cards as examples.
In countries where the program already applies, Google's help page sorts advertisers into five groups (the Australian section, for example):
- Authorized advertisers, licensed by a regulator: banking, credit cards, credit and loans, investment and brokerage, bonds and futures, insurance.
- Approved third parties, who promote financial services with an authorized advertiser's approval.
- Non-financial services advertisers with a compelling reason to target people looking for financial services. Google's example is an online travel agent promoting travel insurance.
- Government entities.
- Financial services advertisers exempt from authorization.
In Quebec, several kinds of businesses could therefore be affected: financial services firms, damage insurance and mortgage brokers, financial planners, deposit institutions and financial product comparison sites. Google will confirm who is covered when it publishes its rules for Canada.
What is still unclear for Canada
- Accepted registries. Google has not named any Canadian body yet. In Quebec, the Autorité des marchés financiers keeps a register of firms and individuals authorized to practise. Google has not said whether it will rely on it, or how it will handle provincial and federal registries.
- The exact date. Google only says "early 2027."
- French. The post was only available in English when this note was published. Google's French-language help pages call the program "validation pour les services financiers."
- One country at a time. According to the help page, verification is done separately for each country that requires it. A Quebec business that also advertises in the United States will have to meet the requirements of both countries.
For businesses advertising in France, nothing changes: the rule has applied there since January 24, 2023. Switzerland is not on the list of countries covered.
What we recommend
- Complete advertiser verification in each of your Google Ads accounts. It is part of the verification process in countries where the program already exists, and an account that is already verified does not need to do it again.
- Take stock of your financial campaigns, including those of partners, affiliates or franchisees that advertise your products. Elsewhere, the authorized advertiser vouches for the third parties that promote it.
- Gather your registration numbers and licences. Compare the legal name and address in your accounts with those in your registration. In Australia, Google requires the details submitted to match the registry exactly: fix any gaps now.
- Decide who will handle it. The application must come from an authorized representative of the business. According to Google, that can be the agency that manages your account: it will then need your documents.
- Watch for notices in your Google Ads account and on the help page listing the countries covered, which Google will update before launch.

Starting in early 2027, financial services advertisers in Canada will have to prove to Google that they are authorized to offer those services. The categories covered, the accepted registries and the exact dates will be published later. You can already complete advertiser verification, gather your licences and align the legal name in your accounts with your registration.
