ChatGPT Shopping: what AI changes for an online fashion store

Partner · Web development, SEO and GEO
ChatGPT Shopping refers to the products ChatGPT displays when a question signals a purchase: images, prices, reviews and links to stores. Since March 2026, the purchase ends on the merchant's site: OpenAI set aside payment inside the conversation. According to OpenAI, this shopping experience is currently offered in the United States. In Canada, ChatGPT still searches the web and cites sites, so a Quebec fashion store has every reason to work now on product pages ChatGPT can read.
- ChatGPT picks products based on the question and the person's context. According to OpenAI, these results are not ads.
- Payment inside the conversation, launched in September 2025, was set aside on March 24, 2026. The customer now pays at the merchant's checkout.
- A Shopify store is read with no action on its part, through Shopify Catalog, as long as it sells to customers in the United States.

Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)
The Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) is the open standard OpenAI developed with Stripe to connect merchants and ChatGPT. Since March 2026, it has been used for product discovery: merchants share their product feed (the file that describes each item, its price and its availability) along with their promotions.
How ChatGPT chooses the products it shows
According to OpenAI's help centre, a product appears when ChatGPT judges it relevant to the request. It takes into account the question, the person's context (their memory and custom instructions) and structured data supplied by merchants or third parties, such as price and description.
Example scenario: a parent asks for a snowsuit for a four-year-old, warm but light, with a set budget. OpenAI explains that a stated budget gives more weight to price. Shopping research then asks follow-up questions, for example about sizes, and returns a buyer's guide with a few picks and links to merchants.
ChatGPT may rewrite your titles and descriptions, add labels such as “Budget-friendly” and summarize reviews published on public websites. OpenAI states that it verifies neither those reviews nor those ratings. ChatGPT ads are separate from these results: our reservations about ChatGPT ads explain why we advise against them.
Payment in ChatGPT: launched in 2025, set aside in 2026
On September 29, 2025, OpenAI launched Instant Checkout: in the United States, a user could buy an item from Etsy sellers without leaving the conversation.
On March 24, 2026, OpenAI wrote that this first version did not offer the level of flexibility it aimed for. Merchants now use their own checkout while OpenAI focuses on product discovery. Its merchant page confirms it: purchases are completed on the merchant's website or app, with no fees on purchases initiated in ChatGPT.
For a Shopify store, your usual checkout opens in a browser built into the ChatGPT app, or in a new tab on the web. Your customizations and payment methods all work there. That is the big difference with Google AI Mode, where the customer can pay without leaving search: we describe it in our note on Shopify and Google AI Mode.
What is offered in Canada as of September 28, 2026
These features change fast. Here is the state of the official sources.
| Feature | What OpenAI and Shopify say | For a Quebec store |
|---|---|---|
| Products displayed in ChatGPT | Offered to users in the United States, expansion to other regions announced with no date | Not yet announced |
| Web search with sources | Offered on all plans, even without an account | Offered |
| Shopify Catalog to ChatGPT | On by default if the store sells to customers in the United States, wherever it is based | Eligible if you sell to customers in the United States |
| Direct product feed to OpenAI | Approved partners, waitlist, standard format that targets the United States | Possible if OpenAI configures this market |
| Payment in the conversation | Set aside in favour of the merchant's checkout | Not applicable |
A Montreal parent who asks ChatGPT for advice today can therefore get an answer that cites sites, without the product showcase. The question is already concrete: according to Caila Schwartz of Salesforce, quoted by Retail Insider on September 1, 2026, roughly 11% to 12% of Canadian shoppers say they turn to AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity first.
How ChatGPT reads your products
ChatGPT receives product data through three paths, which can add up.
Shopify: your products go through Shopify Catalog
OpenAI writes that Shopify merchants' data is already integrated into ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog and that no action is required. Shopify sends the title, description, options, images, price and availability. If your sizes or materials are stored in custom fields (metafields), Shopify's Catalog Mapping tool helps them get read. Shopify also requires your terms of service, privacy policy and return and refund policy.
The direct product feed to OpenAI
A merchant that does not sell through Shopify or Etsy can request access on OpenAI's merchant page, which is reserved for approved partners, with a waitlist. The feed has 9 required fields, including title, brand, image, availability and price. For fashion, the optional fields matter just as much: material, colour, size, gender and age group (from newborn to adult). Each size and colour combination is its own row, with its price and availability.
The open web and the OAI-SearchBot crawler
OpenAI recommends allowing its OAI-SearchBot crawler in the robots.txt file (the file that tells crawlers what they may visit). A site that blocks it does not appear in ChatGPT search answers. This setting is independent of GPTBot, the crawler that collects content for training: you can accept the first and refuse the second. On Shopify, blocking a crawler does not cut off Shopify Catalog. Our guidance is in should you let AI crawlers access your content and the indexes ChatGPT queries are described in what search engine ChatGPT uses.
What a Quebec fashion store can prepare
These steps already serve ChatGPT's web search today. They could also serve its shopping features when they reach Canada.
Product pages that answer a parent's questions
Sizes, material, care and age group are criteria a parent can give ChatGPT: OpenAI even lists sizes among shopping research's follow-up questions. Write the size guide as text on the page, not only in an image.
A clear return policy
Shopify requires it for ChatGPT and OpenAI advises its users to read it before buying. A vague policy could cost you the sale at that exact moment.
Reviews of your products
ChatGPT may summarize reviews published on public websites. OpenAI's feed separates product reviews from store reviews.
A presence in the sources it reads
Shopping research reads retailers' pages and skips a site that blocks automated access. False information is corrected at the source, as explained in our note on assistants that get it wrong.
Sales you can trace
Shopify displays orders from AI channels with their origin. What a visit from an AI is worth is detailed in AI traffic in ecommerce.
Four checks to make this month
- Do you sell to customers in the United States? If so, check the ChatGPT setting under Sales channels, then Agentic.
- Do your product pages give size, material and age group as text, variant by variant?
- Is your return policy published and easy to find from each product page?
- Does your robots.txt allow OAI-SearchBot?
Our eCommerce agency prepares your product pages, your policies and AI crawler access with you so ChatGPT reads your store correctly.
Being present in assistants' answers is at the heart of the Strengthen your visibility in AI answers goal.

Frequently asked questions about ChatGPT Shopping
Can my customers buy my clothes directly in ChatGPT?
No. Since March 24, 2026, the customer discovers and compares in ChatGPT, then pays on your website or app.
Is ChatGPT Shopping available in Canada?
Not yet. According to OpenAI's merchant page, read on September 28, 2026, the shopping experience is offered in the United States and is to expand gradually to other regions, with no date announced. ChatGPT's web search, however, is available and cites its sources.
Do I have to pay for my products to appear in ChatGPT?
No. OpenAI states that product results are not ads and that no fees apply to purchases initiated in ChatGPT. ChatGPT ads are a separate product.
My store is on Shopify: do I need to do anything?
Nothing to be read, if it sells to customers in the United States and its policies are filled in. What still matters is the quality of your product pages and OAI-SearchBot's access to your site.
