A Shopify store is paid for twice: once to build it, then every month to run it. In Quebec, the Shopify plan costs $49 to $517 a month ($37 to $389 a month on yearly billing) and Shopify Plus starts at $3,400 a month. On top come payment fees on every sale, apps and the build itself, from a few hundred dollars if you do it yourself to tens of thousands for a Shopify Plus store.

Key takeaways
  • The Shopify plan costs $49 (Basic), $132 (Grow) or $517 (Advanced) a month on monthly billing, and $37 to $389 a month on yearly billing.
  • Shopify Plus starts at $3,400 a month: volume and operations justify it, not a single feature.
  • Payment fees cost 2.15% to 2.8% + 30¢ per online sale with Shopify Payments, depending on the plan.
  • Shopify offers 24 free themes; a paid theme costs $170 to $420 as a one-time purchase.
  • The cost of a Shopify store is judged on its first full year, not on its launch price.

First-year cost

The first-year cost of a Shopify store adds up the build, twelve months of the plan, apps, the theme and payment fees on expected sales. It is the only number that lets you compare two quotes or two platforms, because it counts what the launch price leaves out.

Shopify plan prices in Canada

Shopify lists its prices in Canadian dollars on its Canadian site. On October 29, 2026, the Basic plan cost $49 a month on monthly billing, Grow $132 and Advanced $517. Paid yearly, the same plans come to $37, $99 and $389 a month. Shopify Plus, the plan for high-volume businesses, starts at $3,400 a month.

The plan of a Shopify store does not change what your customers see. It mostly changes three things: the payment fee rate, management features (reports, staff accounts, B2B catalogues) and the fee Shopify adds if you use another payment provider. A store that is starting out almost always begins on Basic or Grow.

The cost of building a Shopify store

The build is the part that varies most. A Shopify store you set up yourself with a free theme costs the plan and your team's time: photos, product pages, payments, taxes and shipping to configure. This do-it-yourself Shopify store is a reasonable path for a small catalogue and a team that has the time.

For a Shopify store with a paid theme, add $170 to $420 as a one-time purchase. A good paid theme can save an app or custom development; a theme chosen only for its looks can add some.

With an agency, the price follows the number of products, integrations, migration and design. At Falia, a Shopify store project starts from $4,900 and a Shopify Plus project, with a custom theme, integrations and an ERP connection, from $25,000. Allow at least two months for a new store: your products, your photos and your decisions weigh as much as the agency's work.

A migration from another platform adds a step that does not show: the redirect plan, URL by URL, that protects your search rankings. A Shopify store that loses its rankings after a migration can lose its sales with them.

To decide

What to know before asking for a price

Two quotes can only be compared if they answer the same questions.

  • How many products and variants will the Shopify store have at launch?
  • Are we coming from another platform whose products, customers and URLs need to move over?
  • Does the store need to connect to an ERP, accounting software or a warehouse?
  • Do we also sell to businesses, with customer-specific prices?
  • Who will write the product pages and supply the photos?

A serious quote answers each of these questions in writing. A price given before they are asked describes a store other than yours.

The fees that follow every Shopify store sale

After launch, the cost of a Shopify store moves with sales. With Shopify Payments, an online sale on a standard card costs 2.8% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.6% + 30¢ on Grow, 2.4% + 30¢ on Advanced and 2.15% + 30¢ on Plus. Another payment provider adds a Shopify fee of 0.2% to 2% on every sale. The detail is in Shopify Payments fees in Canada.

Apps are the other expense of a Shopify store that grows. Customer reviews, subscriptions, loyalty programs, translation: each is often billed monthly, and they add up without anyone looking back at them. Reviewing your apps once a year can lower the cost of your Shopify store without taking anything away from your customers.

The launch price of a Shopify store says little. The first full year says almost everything.

Falia analysis framework

A first year of a Shopify store, costed

Take a Shopify store on the Grow plan paid yearly, with 1,500 orders of $100 in its first year, all on standard cards through Shopify Payments.

01

The plan

$99 a month for twelve months, or $1,188.

02

Payment fees

2.6% of $150,000 in sales, or $3,900, plus 30¢ per order, or $450: $4,350 in total.

03

Theme and apps

$0 to $420 for the theme, then the monthly total of your apps, from your own list.

04

The build

Your time if you do it yourself, or the price of the quote you choose.

In this example, the Shopify store's payment fees cost more than three times the plan. That is why the plan is chosen on expected sales: above a certain volume, a more expensive plan can cost less overall because its rate is lower. The calculation for moving up is in when to move to Shopify Plus.

What Quebec adds to the cost of a Shopify store

A Shopify store in Quebec sells in French first. If you also sell in English, translating product pages, collections and pages is part of the budget, as is their search optimization: see the multilingual store. The requirements of the Charter of the French language are covered in Bill 96 and your website.

GST and QST have to be set up in your Shopify store with your registration numbers, and Shopify does not remit them for you. Finally, Quebec's Law 25 requires consent before measurement tools that set cookies: the consent banner is planned from the start of the project, not after launch.

To execute

Before asking for a quote, write down on one page your number of products, your expected first-year sales, the platform you are leaving if any and the systems to connect. With that page, the first-year cost of your Shopify store can be worked out in one meeting.

Before signing

The price of a website in general, on every platform, is detailed in how much a website costs in Quebec, and the choice of platform in how to choose your eCommerce platform. To have your store built or migrated, see our Shopify agency in Montreal.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Shopify store cost per month in Quebec?

The Shopify plan costs $49 to $517 a month on monthly billing ($37 to $389 a month on yearly billing), depending on the plan. Shopify Plus starts at $3,400 a month. Payment fees on every sale and the apps you install come on top.

Can you build a Shopify store for free?

Not quite. Shopify offers 24 free themes, but the plan is paid from the day the store opens. A Shopify store you build yourself with a free theme therefore costs at least the plan, plus your team's time.

How much does a Shopify store built by an agency cost?

The price of a Shopify store built by an agency depends on the number of products, integrations, migration and design. At Falia, a Shopify project starts from $4,900 and a Shopify Plus project from $25,000, on a written quote.

Is a paid Shopify theme worth it?

A paid theme costs $170 to $420 as a one-time purchase on Shopify's theme store. It pays off when it saves an app or custom development. Otherwise, a well-configured free theme is often enough.

Which costs do people forget most often?

Payment fees on every sale, apps billed monthly and conversion fees when the customer pays in another currency. They are what push up the cost of a Shopify store after launch.
