What is a sponsored ad in ChatGPT?

A sponsored ad in ChatGPT is a paid placement shown below the end of an answer, marked as sponsored and visually separated from the text produced by the model. According to OpenAI, these ads run on separate systems, and an advertiser cannot modify, rank or influence the answers. Only the Free and Go plans show them. Selection starts from the topic of the current conversation.

Who sees these ads

Only people on the Free and Go plans see ads. The Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans show none, nor do accounts of minors (stated or estimated) or temporary conversations. A free user can also remove ads by accepting fewer messages a day.

This exposure tier sets a campaign's reach before any targeting. An executive working in their company's Business or Enterprise account never sees the ad. OpenAI even presents the absence of ads as a benefit of the paid plans.

How the ad gets selected

The advertiser describes in plain language the conversations where their offer would be useful. There is no exact keyword in the Google Ads sense, and no targeting by company or job title. Country and geographic area, platform and custom audiences are added on top.

According to OpenAI, the system picks the ad based on expected relevance and predicted results. It reads the conversation context, the landing page and the ad text. If the person has left personalization on, it can also take their earlier exchanges and memory into account. Buying is done per thousand impressions (CPM) or per click (CPC).

What the advertiser gets and what it does not

The advertiser gets views and clicks. If it installs OpenAI's pixel or Conversions API, it also gets the conversions measured on its site. It never gets the conversations, the history, the memory, the name, the email, the IP address or the person's precise location.

Measurement is still incomplete: studying the ads' real contribution (the sales they actually cause) is in its early days. In Quebec, the pixel follows your visitors on your site: like Google's or Meta's, it must go through your consent banner to comply with Law 25.

Example

A scenario with fictional figures: a company selling management software to SMBs puts $1,500 into each channel for a month. In ChatGPT, a click costs $3: 500 clicks, 2 leads, or $750 per lead. On Google Ads, a click costs $6: 250 clicks, 10 leads, or $150 per lead.

The click that costs half as much yields a lead that costs five times more. That is why an ad in ChatGPT is judged on cost per qualified lead, never on cost per click alone.

How we read it

We advise most of our clients against these ads. An assistant that sells the space below its answer has two customers to satisfy: the person asking the question and the advertiser paying. Our own B2B test in Canada, in spring 2026, converted at 0.9% in ChatGPT versus 5.95% on Google Ads, for the same client over the same period. A low-priced consumer offer can be an exception.

Before buying a placement, we check whether the business already appears in ChatGPT's unpaid answers on the questions that precede a purchase. If a test goes ahead anyway, we treat it as a small learning budget: measurement installed before the first dollar, decision thresholds written in advance, and a comparison with your awareness campaigns rather than your branded campaigns on Google.

Not to be confused with

Citation in an answer
A citation is an unpaid mention the model chooses to include in its answer. The sponsored ad appears below the answer, marked as such, and according to OpenAI it has no influence on what the model says.
Ad-exposure tier
The ad-exposure tier is the subscription level that decides whether a person sees ads. In ChatGPT, it limits sponsored ads to the Free and Go plans.
Google Ads search ad
A Google Ads search ad responds to a keyword the person typed. An ad in ChatGPT starts from the conversation topic, with no exact keyword match.

Frequently asked questions

Are ChatGPT ads worth it for my business?

For most businesses, we advise against them. Targeting is broad and the audience is limited to the Free and Go plans, where executives are rare. In our B2B test in Canada, ChatGPT ads converted nearly six times less than Google Ads for the same client. A low-priced consumer offer can be an exception.

Can a Quebec business advertise in ChatGPT?

Yes. OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager accepts businesses established in Canada. Targeting by geographic area has been announced: check in the manager how fine it goes before aiming at Quebec alone. Also plan a French version of the ad and of its landing page.

Do ads influence ChatGPT's answers?

No, according to OpenAI's documentation. Ads run on systems separate from the conversation model. An advertiser has no ability to shape, rank or modify the answers. Ads appear below the end of an answer, marked as sponsored and visually separated from the text.
