What is an AI Overview?
An AI Overview, Google's name for an AI-generated summary, is a block of text produced by a language model and displayed above the classic search results. It synthesizes several web sources and cites them with links. It answers the question directly rather than pointing to a page.
What an AI Overview looks like
The block appears at the top of the results page, for only part of all searches. The Pew Research Center, which tracked the real browsing of 900 American adults in March 2025, found that about 18% of Google searches triggered one. The median summary was 67 words long. In 88% of cases, it cited at least three sources.
Summaries show up mostly on long questions: 53% of searches of ten words or more displayed one, compared with 8% of one- or two-word searches.
What it changes for clicks
When a summary is displayed, the click rate to a classic result drops from 15% to 8% of visits, according to Pew. A click on a source cited in the summary happens in only 1% of visits. Definition and quick-fact queries are hit hardest. Vendor searches and transactional queries are hit much less, because a purchase decision requires visiting sites.
These numbers cover the United States. No equivalent measurement exists for Canada: your own share shows up in your Search Console.
How Google picks its sources
The summary draws on pages Google has already indexed and ranked. Google states that no special optimization is required to appear in it: the page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. To gather its sources, the engine can run several related searches on subtopics (query fan-out).
Fictional example: someone searches "how much does an asphalt shingle roof cost". Google displays a summary of about 70 words that cites three roofers. The person gets the answer and closes the page without visiting a site. Someone else searches "roofer quote roof replacement": no summary appears, so they compare three sites and fill in a form. The first search loses its visit. The second keeps its full commercial value.
Falia reads the summary as a shift rather than a crisis. The drop mostly hits informational traffic, which produced few enquiries. Before reacting, we check whether enquiries fell as much as sessions did: the two curves do not move together.
Publishing more informational articles to compensate can make things worse, because that is the content summaries absorb best. The useful effort goes to commercial queries, to a structure that can be extracted, and to data only you own. Not being among the sources means disappearing twice: from the classic result and from the generated answer.

- AI Mode
- AI Mode is Google's conversational mode, where the exchange continues through follow-up questions. An AI Overview is a single block shown above the results of an ordinary search.
- SGE
- SGE was the name of Google's generative experience during its trial. It launched in May 2024 as AI Overviews: a proposal that still talks about SGE is using an outdated name.
- Featured snippet
- A featured snippet lifts a passage as is from a single page. A generated summary writes new text from several sources, which it cites with links.

Frequently asked questions
Can I remove my site from AI Overviews?
Yes. Search Console offers a setting that excludes a site from Search's generative features. It is a leadership decision: it removes the brand from the answers, and no reliable measurement tells you what traffic you give up.
