What is AEO?

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the work of making a page the direct answer shown for a question, rather than one result in a list. It covers featured snippets, answer boxes, FAQs and voice search. Google writes that this work is part of search optimization: the foundations are the same, only the surface targeted changes.

Where AEO shows up

A person types or speaks a question. Instead of a plain list of links, the engine displays an answer: a featured snippet at the top of Google's results, a box of related questions, the sentence read out by a voice assistant. AEO targets these spots, where a single page supplies the answer.

The page that gets picked is the one that answers clearly and quickly. AEO therefore works mostly through content structure: a direct answer up top, sections that stay accurate when extracted, and an FAQ phrased in the customer's words.

How AEO is done

The core move is the answer-first structure: the answer to the question in the title appears in the first words, in one sentence followed by a clarification, before any context. The FAQ reuses the questions salespeople hear, with a short answer to each.

None of this separates from SEO. A page that is poorly indexed or poorly ranked does not become the displayed answer, however good its structure.

Example

Fictional example: a page titled "How long does a heat pump last?" opened with three paragraphs on the company's history. Rewritten, it opens with the answer in two sentences, then details the factors that make it vary. The substance has not changed. The passage an engine can reuse as is now sits at the top of the page.

How we read it

Falia treats AEO as part of SEO, not as one more service. On the GEO page, it forms three layers worked together with SEO and GEO: SEO is the entry condition, AEO makes the page the answer, GEO makes it the cited source.

An acronym is not a method. A proposal that bills AEO on a separate line, without saying what it adds to the SEO you already pay for, can make you pay twice for the same work.

Not to be confused with

Optimizing for generated answers
GEO aims at being cited as a source in an answer written by a generative system (ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews). AEO aims at the direct answer shown for a question, often lifted as is from a single page.
SEO
SEO aims at ranking in the list of results. AEO aims at the answer shown above that list or in its place, on the same foundations.
Answer-first structure
The answer-first structure is a way of writing: the answer first. AEO is the goal that way of writing serves best.

Frequently asked questions

Are AEO and GEO the same thing?

No, but they rest on the same work. AEO aims at the direct answer shown for a question. GEO aims at being cited in an answer written by an AI. Google files both under SEO.

Do I need a separate budget for AEO?

Rarely. The structure that makes a page the answer is part of good SEO. Ask your provider what the AEO line adds, task by task, to what you already pay for.
