Shopify AI shopping channels: the setting that enrolls your store by default

Partner · Web development, SEO and GEO
In the Shopify admin, a single setting that is on by default enrolls your store in every new AI shopping channel: Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT and now Meta, with its Muse agent. Since September 8, 2026, Meta receives your products by default and its checkout also covers customers in Canada. In these built-in checkouts, your pixels do not see the purchase.
A setting that decides for you
The setting is called "Allow Shopify to manage for me." It sits under Sales channels, then Agentic. As long as it stays on, Shopify does three things for you, according to its documentation: it gives AI channels access to your products through Shopify Catalog, it turns on direct checkout where it exists and it enrolls your store in each new channel as soon as it arrives.
That is what happened with Meta. On September 8, 2026, Shopify added Meta to its list of AI channels. Its changelog says it in one sentence: your products are shared with Meta by default. The same day, Meta launched Muse, its personal agent that can shop on the user's behalf.
| Channel | Customers covered | Where the purchase is completed |
|---|---|---|
| Meta (including Muse) | United States, Canada and Mexico | In Meta's checkout, on by default |
| Google AI Mode and Gemini | United States, store based in the United States | In Google's checkout |
| Microsoft Copilot | United States | In Copilot's checkout |
| ChatGPT | United States, store based anywhere | In your store's checkout, opened inside ChatGPT |
What it means for a Quebec store
Meta is the first channel on the list that covers customers in Canada. An eligible Quebec store is therefore already enrolled, unless someone changed the setting. The other channels cover U.S. customers: a store here that sells to the United States is also affected by Copilot and ChatGPT. Google AI Mode also requires a store based in the United States.
Your pixels do not see these sales. According to Shopify, third-party analytics pixels do not fire when the purchase is completed in Meta's checkout. The same goes for Google Analytics and custom pixels in Google's checkout. Only server-to-server events are sent. The order itself lands in your Shopify admin with its source channel. Your advertising dashboards may therefore underestimate your sales.
Some products are left out. Subscriptions, product bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products cannot be bought in Meta's checkout.
No fees for now. Shopify announces no fees for selling through Meta's checkout, beyond your usual payment processing fees.
Reviewing the setting
To take back control, open Sales channels, then Agentic, and turn off "Allow Shopify to manage for me." Each channel then gets its own switch, as does automatic enrollment in new channels ("Auto enroll new storefronts"). For Meta, open its section, turn off Direct checkout, then save.
Turning off Shopify Catalog access removes your products from these channels, but not right away: Shopify mentions a delay of up to seven days. Your products may also remain visible by other means, such as these AIs crawling the web.
Three decisions to make now
- Choose your channels one by one. Staying enrolled can bring you sales. The choice is yours, but today it is made without you.
- Plan your measurement. Track these sales from Shopify orders, channel by channel, rather than in GA4 or in Meta's Ads Manager.
- Review your listings and policies. These channels read your product listings as they are. Under Quebec's Law 25, also check what your privacy policy says about third-party platforms.
Our eCommerce agency reviews these settings with you, channel by channel, along with how these sales are measured.
The purchase journey in Google Search is covered in Shopify and Google AI Mode. What a visit from an AI is worth is explained in AI traffic in online retail.
