What is Performance Max in Google Ads?

Performance Max is an automated Google Ads campaign type that serves your ads across all of Google's surfaces from a single campaign: the Search Network, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps, plus Shopping when a product feed is linked to it. You supply the assets, the conversion goal, the budget and audience signals. The algorithm decides where, when and to whom the ads are shown.

What you supply and what Google decides

The advertiser supplies the raw material: asset groups (text, images, videos, logos) organized by product or service line, plus the Merchant Center feed for an online store. It also supplies audience signals, drawn from its customer lists and its visitors. Google treats them as starting hints, not as limits.

Google decides the rest: the placement, the bid, the combination of assets and the person who sees the ad. The campaign optimizes toward the conversions it is told about and toward their value. A wrong value therefore produces wrong optimization.

Performance Max and your Search campaigns

Performance Max also buys searches. Google states that an exact-match keyword in a Search campaign takes priority over Performance Max when the search is identical to it. Your campaigns on the name of a product or a show therefore keep control.

For other searches, Performance Max can buy queries that contain your brand, even though those customers might have found you without advertising. Brand exclusions, negative keywords and excluded placements are used to take away what does not create a sale.

What changed in 2026

  • Since August 17, 2026, a budget-limited Performance Max campaign steered by a target CPA or ROAS optimizes toward the target entered instead of beating it. Spend can also shift between the campaign's internal channels.
  • Since October 12, 2026, automated promotions are switched on by default for eligible Search and Performance Max campaigns: Google can show in your ads the promotions published on your site without you having created them. The setting is turned off at the account level.
Example

Fictional example: an online clothing store launches Performance Max with its product feed. The report shows a ROAS of 6. A read of the search terms shows that a good share of the sales comes from people who typed the store's name. After a brand exclusion is added, the reported ROAS falls, but the attributed sales come more from people who did not yet know the store.

How we read it

We use Performance Max with tight guardrails. Left alone, it serves Google first: it optimizes what the platform can measure rather than what keeps your business going. Framed by exclusions, asset groups by product line and measurement tied to your actual sales (CRM, conversion values), it becomes a real sales tool.

We read the search terms and the channels where the budget goes. For an online store, we group products by margin in the feed (with custom labels) to bid harder on the ones that pay.

Not to be confused with

Demand Gen
Demand Gen serves visual ads on YouTube, Discover and Gmail to create demand among people who are not searching yet. Performance Max also covers search and Shopping: it captures as much as it creates, with less control over where the budget goes.
Google Shopping
A standard Shopping campaign serves only product ads, from the feed. Performance Max uses the same feed but extends it to all of Google's surfaces and decides the split on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use Performance Max?

Yes, with tight guardrails. Alone, it serves Google first. With brand exclusions, negative keywords and measurement tied to your actual sales, it can become a real sales tool.

Will Performance Max take traffic from my Search campaigns?

Not on your exact-match keywords: Google gives priority to the Search campaign when the search is identical to the keyword. On other searches, ad rank decides between the two campaigns. Reading the search terms shows where the budget goes.
