What is a headless Shopify store?+
In a headless Shopify store, Shopify keeps the products, inventory, cart and checkout, but no longer draws the pages. The site your customers see is built separately (here with Astro) and reads the catalogue through the Shopify API.
Why Astro rather than Hydrogen?+
Hydrogen is Shopify's own framework, built on React. Astro produces very light pages, works well for a content site and is the framework behind our own site: we change it every day with AI. For a headless Shopify store that relies on content and speed, Astro is often the simplest choice.
Does checkout stay with Shopify?+
Yes. In a headless Shopify store, the cart is created through the API and the customer completes the purchase in Shopify's checkout, with Shop Pay, taxes and payment methods already set up.
Will our Shopify apps still work?+
Not all of them. Apps that add blocks to the theme (reviews, cross-sells, pop-ups) do not show up on their own on a headless Shopify site. Back-office apps (inventory, shipping, accounting) keep working. We take stock of your apps before recommending headless Shopify.
Is headless Shopify right for every store?+
