Your Google Business Profile is now a source AI answers cite
Your Google Business Profile has become a source that AI cites. An analysis published in July 2026, covering more than 32 million occurrences, shows that google.com has moved up to second place among the domains cited in AI Mode, with a citation share multiplied by 8.4 between April 15 and June 30, 2026, and that most of it comes from business profiles.
The shift is fast and it is concentrated. The two page types driving the increase are business profiles and product knowledge panels, in other words pages hosted by Google and filled in by the businesses themselves. The sectors most affected are lodging and travel, home services, restaurants, real estate and health care.
One caution is in order before drawing conclusions. The analysis comes from a vendor of AI visibility tools that does not detail its methodology, and it covers a period of two and a half months. We treat it as a strong signal rather than a measurement, and the order of magnitude matters more than the exact multiple.
What this changes for a service business in Quebec
The profile stops being a box to tick when an engagement starts. It becomes a page to maintain, on the same footing as a service page on your site, with the same standard of accuracy and the same review frequency.
The most uncomfortable consequence is this one: on some queries, the page that represents your business in a generated answer is not a page on your site. It is a Google page, whose content you control without controlling its presentation. Out-of-date information there costs more than it used to, because it gets repeated rather than displayed.
The check, thirty minutes
- The services listed: they must match what you sell today, in the words your buyers use.
- The service area: it must reflect your real territory, especially if you travel to the customer.
- The hours, phone number and address: they are cross-checked against your other sources, and a contradiction weakens the whole.
- The description: it will be picked up as is, so it has to stand on its own out of context.
- The profile's questions and answers: they are public and often left unanswered.
- The review frequency: one check per quarter, entered in the calendar like any other page.
A provider that treats the Business Profile as a setup step, done once at the start of the engagement, is working with the rules from before 2026.
Putting the sources that describe your business back in order is part of what we cover in a consultation.
This finding does not replace the work on your site. It adds a page you do not own to the list of those that represent you, and that page can be corrected for free.
