Your citations in Google's answers are already in Search Console

Traffic from Google's generative answers is already counted in Search Console, in the performance report, under the Web search type. Google documents it. Many businesses buy a tool to measure what they already own for free.

The confusion comes from a miscalibrated expectation. People look for a separate line, a report dedicated to generative answers, and do not find one. They conclude nothing is measured, when everything is measured but folded into the total.

That is a real limit, not a flaw in the tool. You see the volume, the queries and the pages receiving clicks, without being able to isolate what came from a generated summary. Comparing two periods remains possible, breaking it down does not.

Google adds one observation that weighs on the decision: clicks coming from a results page carrying a generated summary are of higher quality, with people spending more time on the site. Falling volume can therefore come with rising value per visit, which a traffic report alone will never tell you.

What it does not cover

Search Console only sees Google. Assistants that do not go through search do not appear there, and their traffic arrives in your analytics tool as an ordinary referral source, when it arrives at all.

That is the only case where a third-party tool is justified: tracking your presence in the answers of assistants that are not Google. Paying to measure Google's generative answers means buying back what you have.

What this changes for you

The two-minute check

  • Open your Search Console performance report, Web search type, and compare twelve months against twelve months.
  • Before buying a tracking tool, have someone name what it measures that this report does not.

A solid answer names specific platforms outside Google. An answer promising to track your citations inside Google's summaries is selling data Google does not publish.

Deciding what deserves a paid tool and what does not is part of what we cover in a paid audit.

Good to know

A drop in clicks alongside steady customer enquiries is not a loss. It is filtering done upstream. Look at your enquiries before your visits.

What each platform makes measurable is compared in our article on optimizing for answer engines, and the real effect of summaries on traffic in Google's AI summaries.
